Thattekkad Birding Camp’ is
located in a six acre rubber plantation at “Kaduvappara or the Tiger
Rock”. This area is surrounded by the moist deciduous and
semi-evergreen jungles of Neryamangalam Reserve forests. The nearest
road head is at Palamattom, 4 kms away from Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary,
from where you will be transferred to Kaduvappara by a country boat
across River Periyar (15 minutes ride). A five minutes walk will end
at our camp site.
One Machan and three tents which can occupy two pax each at a time
(total 8 pax) is the maximum capacity. Only vegetarian food will be
cooked and served here. This is basically an elephant infested area,
so all the guests should be informed the same.
You can also opt to trek from Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary to Thattekkad
Birding camp. This trek might take approx 2.5 hrs through the semi
evergreen and moist deciduous forests and teak plantations. This is a
fantastic bird-watching trail too. By the time you reach Kaduvappara,
camp will be all set to receive you. After lunch, go for a short trek
or for bird-watching. Bathe in the River Periyar. Reach back to camp
before night fall.
Through-out the trip, a naturalist and local guides will accompany
you. After dinner around camp-fire, listen to the jungle sounds…
nights might be too noisy sometimes… the trumpeting elephants, cooing
sloth bears, nocturnal birds and sometimes growling of leopards or
tigers, all might make this night so noisy, so prepare yourself.
Wake up to the chirping of birds…
Go for an early morning bird-watching session. After breakfast, you
will be transferred across the River Periyar to Palamattom by country
boat.
