The Periyar protected area lies in the middle of a mountainous area in the Western Ghats.
Hemmed by mountain ridges of over 1700 meter altitude in the north and the east, and a
1200 meter high plateau on the west, the altitude drops steeply to the deepest point of the reserve,
the 100 meter valley of the River Pamba. The periyar protected area is home to unaffected evergreen and
semi-evergreen rain forest. In its confines are 62 different kinds of mammals. (The most famous is probably the tiger,
and there are about 35 to 40 of these. Other mammals include Elephant with a population of around 1000,
Wild Gaur, Sambars, Nilgiri Tahr, Mongoose and Leopards.) More than 320 different kinds of birds and
45 different kinds of reptiles are also found in Periyar. Read more
