Day with the Elephant:

Along the banks of the river Nila, is an elephant rehabilitation centre to rehabilitate captive elephants that are temporarily indisposed both physically and psychologically and to adopt and care for elephants that cease to be economically viable and have turned into a liability for the owner either because of old age and/or terminal illnesses.

There were 250 captive elephants in Kerala in 1983. This number is above 800 now...many of these elephants are kept in intolerable conditions, made to walk long distances on the road, overworked during the festivals and remain tethered when there is no work. At the elephant rehabilitation camp, make first hand acquaintance with elephants and be part of the elephant's daily regime.

Truly unforgettable experience that will make you more conscious of animal welfare and what you could do to help. The elephant camp is set up in the grounds of a 400-year-old heritage home that is completely restored. The family in residence also practice organic farming. The entire days excursion includes lunch with the family, interaction with the female mahout and strolls through the vast acreage.
