Temple festivals:

This is the post harvest season for us on the banks of the River Nila. Plenty of paddy fields after harvest offers the spacious ground for everyone in the village to come together. Continuing a tradition of celebrations after harvest and making use of the free time we have after harvest, every temple has its own festivals. Celebrated by different 'desams', or villages, this a culmination of different caste based art forms and rituals.

Whichever part of the world we are, we all come back to our villages on the banks of the river that connects us to our rich heritage and tradition. Come along and be part of our tradition. Know more about unique folk art forms. Learn about Poothan, Thira, Kala and Kuthira. Be our guest for the whole day.

Season: February till April

Legend Trails:

See the legends of the region come alive before your eyes, be it a visit to Varahamurthy Temple where the legendary Carpenter Perunthatchan laid down his tools unwilling to prvoke the ire of Lord Indra the king of gods who grew annoyed with Perunthatchan for daring to construct a temple that would match the style of architecture in heaven.

The Axe and the measurement scale used by him are still seen between the walls of the temple. Or, make a visit to the hill where the eccentric philosopher‚ Naranathu Branthan’ rolled stones to the top of the hill till evening, only to drop it down with a hysterical laugh.

The unique trail is the one that traces the family tree of the Brahmin Vararuchi who descendants, each went onto become members of eleven different castes. The story that starts from 4 Century AD in the courtyard of Vikramaditya in the North of India has its resonance in this South Indian state and particularly on the banks of the River Nila. This is the story of the Brahmin scholar who left behind his children in different locations on the banks of the river and how they were adopted by different communities and how they become proficient in their areas of operations.

The tradition still continues and surprisingly all these family members still relate to each other and know the family lineage. Ranging from Agnihotri the vedic scholar to UppuKottan who practised Islam, this is a story unmatched. The Legend trail is the best way to get a feel of the river culture. For these are not just stories, but also living and breathing history of a river.

Season: Throughout the year
