About the holiday
This holiday is an exclusive trip that follows River Cauvery from start to finish. A river which has national, political, scientific, historical, mythological and cultural significance flows through a significant part of South Karnataka. A river that has faced over a century of dispute, it continues to flow for the people irrespective of caste, creed, race, religion or origin. This celebrated trail has brimful of river tales that have evolved over the years are waiting to be retold, revisited and remembered.

Meandering across three states – Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, this trip hopes that the traveller can ‘join the dots’ and unravel the hidden mysteries, up surging issues and listen to the legends along the course of its flow. The river has taken various manifestations over the years of worship, struggle, birth and death for many people across different occupations.

This river trail is specially crafted to suit the needs of a curious, ardent and a serious traveller. However, it’s just as much fun as history! If you think that a river trail with decades of history is fun, then you are on the right track.

Sample Itinerary:

Day 1:
Drive to Wayanad.
Overnight at Wayanad.

Day 2: Leave early morning to where the River Cauvery originates. Trek along Kuruva Dweep where you can literally hop, skip and jump over 107 islands. The tributaries of River Cauvery fill up this island. Optional visit to a craft village, Uravu in Wayanad. Overnight at Wayanad.

Day 3: Leave early morning to Kodagu, cleanse yourself in the source of the River Cauvery, Talacauvery. Visit the holy shrine at Baghamandala, beneath Talacauvery. Stroll along different plantations and spices in Kodagu. River rafting and trek on the Brahmagiri range - optional. Overnight stay a Kodagu.

Day 4: Leave early morning for Kabini rummaging past the Nagarhole Bird Sanctuary. River raft or kayak along the ripples of River Cauvery. Coracle rides helps you linger about the river. Overnight at Kabini.

Day 5: Leave early morning for Srirangapatnam, Tipu’s town. Visit the Bathing Ghat of and Nagakkals overlooking the Cauvery at Tirumakudal Narsipur. These are reminiscent of legends and myths waiting to be retold in Srirangapatnam. Stay overnight at Srirangapatnam.

Day 6: Leave early morning for Somnathpur to visit the famous Keshava temple. Drive to Talakad, where the Cauvery flows and meanders into several tributaries. Trek up Sivasamudram if possible and explore the caves and nature on the way up. Drive to Bheemeshwari Fishing camp for overnight stay.

Day 7: Relax on the banks of River Cauvery. Fishing is a common activity at Bheemeshwari amongst other water sports. Lie on a hammock, listening to the flow of the river if fishing is not your forte. Overnight at Bheemeshwari.

Day 8: Drive to Sangama where Arkavati merges with Cauvery. Visit 'Mekedatu' (means, 'goat's leap' in Kannada) and Hogenakal falls. The Cauvery, sweeps into Tamil Nadu and creates numerous waterfalls as the water cuts through the rocky terrain. Explore a trekking route to Mettur for camping else stay overnight near BR Hills.

Day 9: Drive down to Mettur along the Bhavani River and past Erode where there is a confluence of Bhavani and Cauvery. Visit Kodumudi, a small town on the banks of river Cauvery with an array of temples. Overnight at Trichy.

Day 10: Visit Srirangam and enter the fertile delta of the River Cauvery into Cholamandalam better known as Coramandel Coast. Srirangam is bounded by the river on one side, and its tributary Kollidam (Coleroon) on the other side. Overnight at Trichy.

Day 11: Explore the ancient temples and art village of Tanjavur. Venture into the one of the oldest temple towns of Thiruvayavur and Kumbakanom. Overnight at Poompuhar.

Day 12: Explore Poompuhar, where the river meets the ocean. Ancient pottery dating back to the 4th or 5th century C.E. has been discovered off shore around this town. Overnight at Poompuhar.

Day 13: Leave for Karaikal, a peaceful way to end the long lasting Cauvery river trail.
It is known for its diversity as people from different religions coexist in perfect harmony here. Overnight at Karaikal.

Day 14: Drive past the Nagore Beach and Chidabaram, all the way to Pondicherry for a relaxing lunch suited to your needs at the end of this long, meandering journey. Depart from Chennai
